Lower Back Pain
Most of us experience back pain during our lives.
It can be extremely disabling or it can be very chronic and continue to niggle over many years.
Here at The Physiotherapy Clinic we can offer the complete package to manage your needs:
It is vital to have a full assessment with a physiotherapist so we can determine where your pain is coming from and most importantly what is causing the pain. This allows us to accurately treat you and relieve your symptoms as quickly as possible.
Treatment can then be geared towards your individual needs.
With acute back pain you need fast effective relief from your pain and here at the physiotherapy clinic we offer the following treatments for pain relief:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joints mobilisation
- Myofascial release
- Acupuncture/electro acupuncture
- Kinesio taping
- Home exercise programme to suit your needs
Back pain can also be an unwelcome complication during pregnancy. Hormone changes create increased laxity in the pelvic ligaments in preparation for the baby passing through the birth canal. This combined with postural changes as the baby grows can put a huge strain on the lumbosacralpellvic region. The approach to treatment will vary in that some modalities cannot be used but we can advise you on positioning, support and what exercise you can do to alleviate the pain.
All of our physiotherapists use up to date research and proven techniques. Managing ongoing chronic back problems can be frustrating and wearing. Long term back problems are often very complex. Here at The Physiotherapy Clinic we are able to offer full management of your problems to enable you to return to a much better quality of life and to reduce the risk of issues further down the line. So after a full assessment we can develop a treatment plan which allows you to achieve pain relief, return to full activities including work and sport. Chronic back pain also responds well to the above pain relief modalities – they may just be applied slightly differently.
Patients with ongoing chronic back problems can present in a number of ways.
We find some patients develop extreme tightness through their joints and this can overload and cause pain and degeneration. These patients require lots of hands on therapy with an emphasis on stretching out the muscles and joints.
Other patients present with excessive movements through their joints and this leads to pain and instability. This can be a big cause for back problems if the deep abdominal muscles are weak. Our physiotherapists are very skilled with exercise prescription and will give you a progressive exercise routine designed to get you much stronger. Once you are feeling better and have less pain we can focus more on improving your strength. Flexibility, functional activities and if necessary your return to work.
Most back problems respond well to exercise and we can help you to develop a progressive exercise regime. We have physiotherapists trained in Pilates and we can help you with your return to sport liaising with your personal trainer, Pilates instructor or sports coach.
We also have other therapists in our team who are all helpful in the management of back pain.
- Cognitive behavioural therapist/hypnotist
- Sports masseur
- Aquatic therapy
- Rehab Pilates
If by any chance we are not able to help with your problems and you require a specialist opinion we work closely with the local Consultants.
